Reboot on Summer School

More and more I am confessing to my Classical Conversation friends we are "unschoolers".  I mean, maybe we aren't "unschoolers" by a strict definition of "unschooling" (if there is such a thing).  But it definitely feels looser and looser as the years go on.  I have determined we will reboot and keep going through summer.  3 main subjects: math, reading, science.  This has proved to be relatively successful AND the boys have been relatively cooperative.

We started Apologia science last week.  Anatomy and Physiology.

Today we studied the parts of the cell.  I got out the microscope (we've had this since Julia did Biology...)  The boys were fascinated by the microscope and all the slides.  Keaton wanted to look at his spit and other interesting things.

We discussed and labeled the parts of the cell and what they do.  Even Cole (who absolutely detests writing!) was drawing and labeling his cell.

Plus we grabbed a throwback video from 2012 where Eric created a "cell".

And for math, we still drill on math facts, but I also picked up a series of books called, "The Life of Fred".  Both boys actually think that Fred's life is hilarious.  Keaton is zipping through this book.  The math itself is very simple, but practical, in this elementary series.  But it is in the form of a narrative, which he enjoys.  And it builds on itself.  Conceptual math is a difficult thing for Keaton to grasp.  The story of the math is helping him understand.  Cole is pretty good at the concepts, but "Life of Fred" is teaching him to read better.  I can hear them both giggling while doing math.  Is that a trip, or what?

So maybe it's not "unschooling", but it is more enjoyable than textbooks and on-line video teachers.
